Beacon farms was formed from a passion for proper British produce. Our deep rooted family history in both farming and butchery have allowed us to enjoy some of the finest quality foods from the idyllic countryside of the South West of England, where we were lucky enough to grow up. We are here to share this with you.
Where it all began
Beacon Farms was founded by William, Charlotte and James. There are two sides to our families history, with one in farming and the other in butchery.
Growing up we would often be found helping out on our grandparents’ farm. We saw first hand the challenges faced by the British farmer, as supermarkets put pressure on the price of farm produce, prioritising volume and low prices over quality. In turn, this forced farms to intensify their systems, producing more produce at a faster rate to be able to meet the supermarkets demand and make ends meet.
Farmers are often faced with two choices, meet the supermarkets demand, or give up and sell the farm. Unfortunately, our family could no longer afford to farm in that market, and made the decision to sell up. But there was hope.
In 1988 our father started his own award-winning traditional butchers shop, offering a new marketplace for local farmers to sell their outstanding produce at a fair price, to people who value their food, where it comes from as well as the dedication, effort and level of care that goes into making it.
Having grown up within a passionate agricultural community, we were eager to get back into farming ourselves and do things the right way. In 2021, the opportunity came up to rent a small farm of our own and start again. We decided if we were to do this, we would do it in the right way. Working with nature, following traditional methods with a sustainable focus, we set out to produce premium quality British produce that we could then sell within our local shops.
The feedback was amazing, there was still a marketplace which valued and supported sustainable British farming. People loved the produce, how it had been meticulously grown, not just to benefit the environment, but the resulting impact of slow grown, grass fed produce also happens to be a level of quality you would expect of exclusive restaurants.
Having this small local marketplace to sell our produce was great, but we couldn’t help but wonder why is this only reserved for people who were fortunate enough to live near our shops?
After 4 years of farming on our own, we decided to partner with a hand selected network of like minded producers and create a marketplace where anyone can have access to our quality sustainable produce. Through this website, and our family butchery, we provide nationwide access to sustainable farmed, expertly prepared, proper British produce.
By buying from Beacon Farms, you are choosing to support and encourage British farmers to continue their commitment to producing sustainable, proper produce.
